More Gotta Haves from
SHOT '07
By Peggy Tartaro,
Executive Editor
Last
issue, Gila Hayes and Maria Heil took you on a tour of some of
the highlights of SHOT Show 2007. But it's a big show. Really
big.
Even though I didn't get out of the Second Amendment Foundation
(parent of W&G) booth as often as I would have liked, I did
get to see quite a bit of the firearms industry's biggest event.
So, here are a few more items we saw, some of which may be
reviewed in depth in future issues.
The oldest firearms company in the world-indeed one of the world's
oldest manufacturers of any kind, Beretta USA, showed the latest
additions to their successful Px4 Storm line of semi-automatic
pistols; the new Px4 Storm 45, Px4 Storm Special Duty 45 and
the Px4 Storm sub-compact.
For the concealed carry market, the Beretta design team has
also completed the development of an all new Px4 Storm sub-compact
model called the Px4 Storm sub-compact, available in 9mm and
.40 S&W. Like the larger Px4, the sub-compact model builds
upon the same ergonomic design but in a much more compact frame
and slide, making it perfectly suited for concealed carry with
maximum firepower. The 9mm magazine holds 13 rounds, while the
.40 holds 10. Operating controls are identical, as are many components
shared with the standard Px4. Full-size extended magazines may
also be used on the Px4 SC. Super-Luminova sights are standard.
Built and designed in the USA, the sub-compacts retail for around
$600.
Makers of the GunVault pistol safes now introduce the GunVault
Bio 2000 with biometric fingerprint recognition technology. New
design combines the look and feel of the original No-Eyes
control panel with a single fingerprint recognition groove, which
replaces the activation button under the index finger. Theft
protection and reliable access are ensured, allowing instant
access even in total darkness.
While
maintaining many of the traditional GunVault characteristics,
GunVault Bio utilizes programmable biometric scanner technology
to make accessing firearms and valuables faster and more secure
than ever before. A high-performance algorithm is used to achieve
quick identification of enrolled fingerprints while maintaining
a very low False Reject Rate (FRR). The self-learning algorithm
of the GunVault Bio adds new minutiae to the fingerprint templates
each time a user touches the sensor. The system can handle up
to 30 fingerprint templates.
Available in the Multi Deluxe version, GunVault Bio is constructed
of tamper-proof, 16-gauge steel and features a soft foam interior
to protect its contents. The unique biometric keypad triggers
an omni-directional spring-loaded door that has a high-strength
lock mechanism.
Powered by a 1-year battery, the GunVault Bio includes a backup
key for emergency access. Additionally, the GunVault Bio can
be securely bolted into a vehicle trunk or floor, or mounted
under desks or in closets with bolts or the optional high-strength
security cable.
The GunVault Bio Multi Deluxe is 14x10.1x7.9 inches, tapering
to 6.3'' high and weighing 14 pounds. A removable interior shelf
perfect for storing more than one firearm is also available.
GunVault Bio retails for a suggested price of $299.00.
Usually at SHOT, I run into my friend Karen at Lyman, but this
year I missed the opportunity to talk new products and tomato
gardening with her.
One of Lyman's brands,
TargDots, was introducing The Duelist, their newest rimfire target,
and it looked like fun. Designed for rimfire ammunition, it allows
two shooters to engage separate targets to see who is fastest.
When one target plate is knocked down, the other plate is "locked"
in the upright position. This unique feature of the Duelist assures
that there is a clear-cut winner every time. To reset the targets
for another "duel," a reset plate raises the fallen
target when hit.
In addition, individual shooters can also use the Duelist as
a resetting target for lots of practice without ever having to
go down range to change targets. Constructed of heavy gauge steel,
the target is designed to provide years of rimfire fun. A collection
of stick-on aiming points and targets is included in the system.
You can even go on-line and print out additional targets. At
under $40, the system seems like a good idea for folks with more
than one shooting enthusiast in the family.
Maria did a fine job of covering some of the hunting clothing
available for women that was shown at SHOT. I'm not a hunter
myself, but did gather some info at the show. I liked Browning's
sharp-looking camo field sweater in 100% cotton knit with cotton/polyester
camouflage twill in a Mossy Oak® camouflage pattern. The
sweater has a shooting patch overlay with Reactar pad pockets
on both shoulders (pad sold separately). The 4-button Henley
neck with Browning horn logo buttons and elbow patch would certainly
come in handy for hunting or shotgun games, but it looks like
it might also give them pause at the Scrabble Club. It comes
in sizes S, M, L, and XL with a $70 price tag.
The folks at Taurus
International have decided to release its next generation military
pistol to civilian and law enforcement markets ahead of the now-postponed
Joint Combat Pistol (JCP) system trials.
The new 24/7 OSS, available in .45 ACP, .40 cal and
9mm, was designed and built to exceed all requirements originally
set forth by the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) for its
new sidearm and is capable of firing tens of thousands of rounds
in virtually any environment for unprecedented reliability, accuracy
and durability in real-world situations.
The performance of the 24/7 OSS is due in part to Taurus'
most recent industry-changing innovation -the Single Action/Double
Action trigger system. Firing normally from single action mode,
if the primer ever fails to ignite, the gun reverts to a double-action
mode to provide a life-saving second or third try at a faulty
cartridge-giving the 24/7 OSS a failure-free reliability.
An integral Picatinny rail system that accommodates slide-on
lights or laser sights, a SA/DA indicator on the rear of the
slide that shows whether the pistol is in "cocked"
or "decocked" mode, front slide serrations and a reversible
magazine release combine for increased versatility of the new
OSS.
The Taurus 24/7 OSS DS model features ambidextrous decock/safety
levers that allow the user to carry the gun with the striker
cocked and ready to fire, and can then be kept in safety-on "cocked
and locked" mode. The user can also release the internal
striker without discharging the chambered round by simply pushing
upwards on the safety lever, which then places the pistol in
double-action mode. You can then carry the gun in double-action
mode with or without the safety on. The 24/7 OSS is also available
in a D model, with decocker only.
Both
24/7 OSS models come standard with a visual loaded chamber
indicator and the unique Taurus Security System® that allows
users to securely lock the gun. The new Taurus 24/7 pistols
will carry an MSRP of about $600 and feature the company's Lifetime
Repair Policy.
The nice folks at Birchwood Casey often send around an envelope
full of goodies before the SHOT Show, to highlight some of their
many products and accessories. New this year is the company's
Burst Revealing Targets, which instantly show bullet hits in
a high visibility white ring.
Big Burst targets show hits on the entire target from border
to border, so even marginal shots are visible. The orange and
black color provides maximum contrast with the white bullet impacts
to make it easy to see where you are shooting without the aid
of a spotting scope or binoculars.
Big Burst Revealing Targets are self-adhesive for easy set-up
and come in a variety of sizes including 3" to 12"
round and a 12" sight-in version.
Suggested retail is $4.70 each for the: a variety of different
Big Burst target packages, ranging from a 48-pack of 3"
targets to a 3-pack of 12" sight-in targets.
